I have been trying to figure out why some of my forums earn more from ads then others. They are all pretty much the same so it has been driving me crazy why they don't average about the same in ad revenue. After doing some investigation... I figured out that the forums that had more content that was targeted to the site got more clicks. The other forums that had more general chat didn't get as much clicks.
If you are having a problem generating ad revenue from your forum, check the content. Do you have more content that is general chat then targeted content? If so, you might want to work on that and it will help get your ad revenue up.
This is why you have to moderate all the duplicate and spam messages posted if you are hoping to make any revenue off your forum.
Wow, guys! You both have very good points and I am very thankful I found this post. I have sent this post to a friend that is having this exact problem. I'm sure she will be thankful!
I was talking to a friend and he was telling me that he was getting about 50-100 visitors a day but no one was signing up for service. After looking in more detail at the traffic. I found a lot of the traffic was coming from traffic swarm and other exchange sites like that. I explain to my buddy that he needed traffic that was more targeted for his site. What I am trying to say here is... Also check the traffic. If you are not getting traffic from good links or search engine keywords, that could also be causing a drop in ad revenue.

Ahh, yeah. It has always amazed me how people are talked into signing up for sites like this without understanding their true benefit. IMO they are great to generate real visitors. Here is an example.
If you have a store in the mall and people see other people walking in and out of your store... You are going to spark interest. That is the only thing they are good for IMO.
So, I am so confused.
How do you generate revenue for say a medical service? Its not like a web service or things like that.

Alot of the forums I visit do seem to have most of the threads in general chi chat and not alot of content specific to the theme of the forum. While I understand general information is good, but how do you direct more threads to relevant topics?

In general, if the company has a website you just put ads that sponsor products or services that would complement the services the company sold.

The best way is to seed the forums you want more posts in with good posts that will generate conversation.
